More Than a Thriller

Plot: On the eve of the First World War, strange events upset the calm of a small town in Germany. A rope is placed as a trap to bring down the doctor's horse, a barn is torched, two children are kidnapped and tortured. Gradually, these isolated incidents take the form of a sinister ritual of punishment, leaving the city in panic. The teacher of the choir of children and teenagers from the local school investigates the events to find the responsible and slowly uncovers the disturbing truth.

Directed by Haneke

OUR OPINION:

Although say "The White Ribbon" is a thriller is obviously put a label on a feature film that is much more than that. It seems clear that Haneke watched "The Village of the Damned", another film about a rural village where children are essential for solving the mystery, and there are plot elements that evoke the atmosphere of "The Village". By the way, "The White Ribbon" would make a perfect double feature with "The Serpent's Egg" also a film dedicated to examining the pre-Nazi German society, just with more urban perspectives. Above all this, is the clear notion that the combination children plus violence is frequent in the productions of the Austrian director and, in this case, "The White Ribbon" can be understood as a film-brother of "Caché". Great movie experience, but be prepared to sweat in the chair.
